Fashion Friday: Teal and Coral: I have a plan bwahaha

All right. Let's talk about brown. Isn't it super? Awesome? Totally great? Okay, and boring, but so's black so we're moving on. Picture!

Brown, teal, sea green, coral, orange, gold, rust, more brown, and a touch of beige. So, this picture is me. Aren't I colorful? And intense? And slightly ominous? Hm. Maybe this isn't me, but it's probably bits, around the edges.

This is for my spring capsule, because I like planning ahead, particularly during winter when the reality is too bleak for contemplation. Particularly when everything's so green. It's confusing.

Anyone else have spring/summer inspiration breaking through the bleak midwinter?

Theatrical Thursday: Hobbitses

The best movie of 2012 was.... (like you don't know if you read the title) HOBBITSES!!!! (Are they good to eats?)

Rapture. Divine brilliance! People running around in New Zealand in fantastic costumes! Er, I mean Middle Earth.

I loved the way that they didn't screw it up! How often do you watch a movie and they deliver a line and you're like, "Why did they do that? The writer wrote the line the right way, who decided that it wasn't good enough? Huh? Who?" and then we want to string up whoever was so shockingly presumptive. Only we don't because we're civilized people who only string up ogres and orcs. We'd string up trolls too except that we couldn't possibly lift them.

I loved their special effects, loved their casting. (Thorin, run away with me!) Loved their accurate portrayals, but most of all and especially, LOVED THE MUSIC.

I wish wish wish it wasn't so graphic and terrifyingly suspenseful or I'd bring my kids. It was so brilliantly engaging, it didn't feel at all long in spite of being quite long, and coming out of the theater in an ice storm was kind of exciting, and humming the song for the next week, and then googling it again when I forgot so it would be in my head again because that song is a good thing. I want to write an entire book that feels like that song. And Thorin. Sigh. I'm buying this movie when it comes out, maybe the soundtrack too.

Any other opinions on best for 2012?

Writerly Wednesday: Hybrid in review

All right. There's this song,

And it's kinda poppy, kinda peppy but super, overwhelmingly, nearly sickeningly sweet, and it's the theme song that flowered into epitome during the last quarter of Hybrid. This song, the sappiness is remarkably perfect for the first love budding and then bursting into life, and it makes sense, and listening to the song on repeat for a month really made the whole thing cohesive, (I'm going to say it again) with the budding bliss and rapture, optimism and unflagging hope we get from Dariana.

So Dariana isn't always so hopeful, and maybe this is a bad thing because she's this new soul, so I'm cringing here, but maybe I have to go back over the thing with this song on repeat and fill in some bits, chop, carnage, rip out some angst and fill it with sweet. Is this fair to my sense of closure after flinging Hybrid into the published ether? Well, I'm my biggest audience, so, yeah, I am. Sorry to those waiting on books cuz they're not going to happen 'til I've told the world. Yep.

Any songs on repeat this week? Month? Ever?

Trauma Tuesday: unmaking of the princess dress

Let's talk about unmaking. What's the fantasy book about the unmakers? Where the guy saves everyone by destroying everything first? Well, that's great, right? Completely illogical, like in Iron Monkey where they have a poison cure by using... (you guessed it) poison. Love it. So here I am, ripping apart all these little girl dresses to use for slips for the fantastically fantastic dress for my upcoming 8yr old, sweet pea.

It feels futile. Purposeless, but perhaps I'm one thread away from coming to the other side, tipping over like on Thor where the planet shifts, up becomes down and voila! All those irrationals are proven worthy. So I'm unmaking.

I would post pictures, but who wants photos of slips in process? Boring. Could I photograph them beautifully? Will have to see tomorrow when there's light to work with. Maybe it'll inspire a painting. So that's something to look forward to, pictures of stuff! Woot! This blog is finally stepping into its own.

movie monday

This week I'm all about Howl's moving Castle by Diane Wynne Jones which was made into an animated full length feature by Hayao Miyazaki.

The book, an utterly enchanting romp something like Baum's classic Wizard of Oz but with a sort of steampunk twist that I find irresistible. There's even an umbrella. It's the book in a three part series that don't particularly need chronology to understand what's going on about a girl without magic who becomes cursed by the Wicked Witch of the West becoming an old woman and goes to the notorious Howl, in his moving castle who eats the hearts of beautiful young women, to try and learn how to break the curse. It's whimsical and deep in the same breath.

So the theme I'm loving is the whole, he's beautiful, she's old and ugly, and somehow that makes it possible for true love to blossom.

The movie. While it was utterly enjoyable visually, it lacked a lot of the backstory that made the whole thing rational. That didn't bother me, but it might bother some people. The best part of the movie, hands down, was Lauren Bacall as the Wicked Witch of the West. Absolutely brilliant! I'm so glad she's immortal so I'll never have to live without her (I'm talking about movies, not vampirism. Just to be clear).

I'm going to have to watch it again, and read it again, for the sake of deepening my understanding of the depth that I'm sure I missed the first time around. Definitely a must read/see!

Any fave movie/books that you can recommend? Any worst book/movie adaptations?

If I were a seamstress, badadubadabadubadabadoobadabadum

If I were planning to attend an upscale event, something grand, formal, elegant, I would make this:

113_1212_b_large

Oh yes, I would. Wouldn't you?

The scene is set. Candles dance in the gusts made by masked dancers in their floor sweeping gowns as they float across the dark floor in the arms of their lovers. The scent of jasmine and mahogany drift through the air, as though the very night were seducing you.

For New Year's, there was no Eve, because without dancing there is no point. Instead, there was my first ever coffee cake

and this:
We had a New Year's Tea party, then sledding. New Year's Day is usually not so great from being cranky and tired from the night before. It was so lovely, this will be my new tradition!

Happy New year Everybody! Anyone have a great New Year's? Did anyone make new traditions for the Holidays?
